During the last century there has been
little change to the theory of shotgun chokes. With the introduction of steel
shot, drastic changes were required. The reason for this being – steel shot
produces tremendous pressure and shock as it passes through the choke
restriction which consequently may result in choke and/or barrel distortion when
used with chokes manufactured to accommodate lead (soft) shot. The shotgun
manufacturer’s answer to this problem was simple: Keep using the lead compatible
chokes but with a lighter (more open) restriction when using steel shot
cartridges.
We at Precision Arms did
not agree and felt shooters deserved a better solution and started our own
research and development program. During our extensive research and development
years, in an effort to provide the ultimate steel shot compatible chokes, we
have discovered that the only way to get maximum efficiency while using steel
shot cartridges is to manufacture a choke which is specifically designed to
accommodate steel. Although this choke is lead compatible, the ultimate lead
pattern would be compromised. Most other manufacturer’s chokes have a parallel
section which creates a pattern with a very dense centre and at the same time
creating a very high pressure area through that section which is how barrel or
choke expansion is caused.
During our lengthy
testing process, we found that a full length choke taper controls steel shot
patterns extremely well and at the same time increases shot velocity and lower
barrel pressure and creates a more uniform shot pattern. The effective range of
any particular modern shotgun cartridge is determined by the cartridge load and
the choke restriction being used, not by the barrel length as some have been led
to believe. Modern shotgun cartridges achieve their maximum velocity at
approximately half the length of the average shotgun barrel. Our after market
chokes are custom manufactured to fit your existing thread pattern, whether it
was done at the shotgun factory or one of the other after market choke
manufacturing shops such as Briley or Rhino (for example).
We also manufacture and
install thin wall chokes designed for fixed choke barrels – So don’t give up on
your favourite fixed choke shotgun – have the barrel(s) machined to accommodate
PRECISION chokes. Our chokes can be meticulously fitted in most shotguns
including doubles (over/under and side by side) and are virtually invisible.
PRECISION chokes are
already being used by clay target shooters all over North America, including
three past national champions and the current national champion. The performance
of steel shot will obviously never compare to the performance of lead. However,
steel can be very effective with the right equipment.
